History of the Mad March Hare

Making a difference…
The Mad March Hare was inspired by a lady called Irene Hare, a member of Swindon Twin Peaks Power Walking group and a keen fundraiser for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Sadly, Irene lost her life to breast cancer in 2006, aged only 46.

A group of friends and supporters of Wiltshire Breakthrough Group recognised the opportunity to start a 5km and 10km event aiming to encourage people to become more active and to raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer Wiltshire Group.

With funding from the Lottery Awards for All and the support of Swindon Borough Council – Challenge Swindon, the Mad March Hare was underway.

After six months of planning, the first Mad March Hare event in 2008 did not start as intended. Adverse weather the week before had flooded Lydiard Park and parts of the routes were underwater. For the health and safety of the entrants and volunteers the event had to be postponed. The Organising Team were bitterly disappointed but worked hard to rearrange it for two weeks later. This time the sun shone brightly and 240 people completed the event.

In 2008 we also attracted our first sponsors, the Big Adventure Store and Les Slinn Personal Training. The event is now held each year and continues to offer walkers, joggers and runners of all ages and abilities a fun time.

The rest is history…

The Organising Team are very proud of the Mad March Hare; we are all volunteers who work really hard all year round to make the Mad March Hare the successful and fun event it is.
