Each year, the Mad March Hare Team launch a JustGiving donation page so that people taking part in the Event can raise sponsorship and make donations. This year Abi Jones is taking part in Mad March Hare and has raised a fantastic amount. We asked Abi if she would tell use her inspiring story and we’re please to share it here.
At the beginning of 2021, I had a think about my life. I had just completed a 4-year chartered manager degree apprenticeship whilst also working full-time. Therefore, I hadn’t moved much for a few years, and was the heaviest I’ve ever been. I wanted to be healthier, so started eating differently, and moving more. This culminated in me completing the Couch to 5K running challenge, which I was amazed that I could do.
In the late Spring, my very close friend Ali had terrible news. She suffered from endometriosis for 5 years, and at last had a hysterectomy. Unfortunately, the operation revealed she had cancer in her womb, but also that this had now spread to her liver. In Summer, my lovely friend told me she didn’t have long to live. Her family and friends were all devastated.
The last time I visited Ali in her hospice, I told her I’d like to do a 5K run to raise some money for a cause of her choice. She chose a cancer charity and a second one I have yet to plan!
So, when I spotted an advert for the Mad March Hare event, I signed up, to try to raise some cash for Breast Cancer Now. This is the first time I have done anything like this, and I am very slow, but also very determined. Running has helped me sort through some negative emotions I’ve felt since Ali died, and if I can use it to raise some money and awareness, I feel I should go for it. I am really grateful to everyone who has sponsored me and I know Ali would be so pleased.Abi Jones
