Bristol: It turns out that staff at HMP Bristol have been awarded almost a quarter of a million pounds in compensation for injuries they got while working. This payout comes from the government and covers the last five years.

In the past year alone, prison staff made more claims than ever before. The main reason? Injuries from attacks by inmates or while trying to control them. It’s a tough job, and the numbers show just how risky it can be.

According to figures from a law firm that specializes in these cases, the Ministry of Justice paid out £69,411 in 2023-24. That’s a big jump from the previous year, which was around £43,827. It’s also slightly more than what was paid out in 2021-22, when a backlog from the pandemic was cleared.

Over the last five years, the total compensation has reached £241,699. This is part of a much larger sum paid to injured prison officers across the UK. It’s clear that the risks are real, and the injuries often stem from situations that could have been avoided with better safety measures.

Most claims come from assaults by prisoners. Since 2019, there have been 637 such claims in the UK. Other reasons for claims include slips, trips, and falls, as well as injuries during control procedures. In total, there have been 1,628 claims against prisons in the last five years.

A spokesperson for the law firm pointed out that prison staff face a lot of stress and danger every day. Even with safety processes in place, things can go wrong, leading to injuries or assaults.

Interestingly, the prison population has been rising for the last 30 years, but the number of staff hasn’t kept pace. This has created a challenging environment for officers, with reports of over eight assaults on staff every day.

In response to the growing prison population, the UK government started Operation Early Dawn, which allows some prisoners to be released early. This has led to around 1,700 inmates being let out after serving just 40% of their sentences.

HMP Bristol has faced scrutiny in recent years, being placed in ‘special measures’ due to overcrowding, violence, and other issues. It’s a tough place to work, and the staff deserve support and protection.

Lucy Parker, a solicitor, emphasized that prison staff have the right to seek compensation if they’re injured due to negligence. It’s important for them to know their rights and get the help they need to navigate these claims.
