Hundreds take part in Mad March Hare run

WEST Swindon was awash with pink rabbit ears on Sunday morning as hundreds of runners took part in the Mad March Hare race.

Now in its ninth year, the 10k and 5k event sees people of all abilities set off from Lydiard Park Academy to raise cash for Breast Cancer Now.

Many of the participants don the rabbit ears and dress in pink to make the event fun for all. In total just over 400 are thought to have taken part this year.

One of the organisers, Kathy Doyle, said: “It’s great because everyone is here to have fun and raise money for a good cause.

“It’s not competitive and people support each other all the way round. We have people of all ages and abilities.

“Some take a pushchair around the course with them and some just walk while there are some serious runners as well but mainly it’s about having fun.

“We are in our ninth year and it’s fantastic to see so many people coming to take part, some of who keep coming back each year.

“There are also around 100 volunteers down here giving their time and we couldn’t do it without them.”

So far the Mad March Hare has raised almost £90,000 for charity and it is hoped in the tenth year they can break the £100,000 barrier.

Among those taking part was Steve Goulding who is part of the Shin Splints running group and was going around the course with a friend who is blind.

He said: “This is a great event which our group has been taking part in for several years now. Some of members also run around with kids in wheelchairs and pushchairs so everyone can take part.

“It is perfect because we are inclusive and so is the race with the winner being charity.”

Also running was Julie Harrison of Upper Stratton who has been running for four years.

“It’s good to be able to support a great local event as well as a good cause,” she said.

“I did it last year and it was great. Most of the running is close to where I live so it’s good to do it on another course.”
