A mother is upset after her daughter, 9, refused to go to school. This followed a sex education lesson that left the child feeling anxious and stressed.

City: Stunned Emma Cormie is speaking out about her daughter’s experience. She’s upset about the “inappropriate material” shown in sex education classes.
Emma’s daughter, just nine, came home anxious after seeing pictures of naked people. She mentioned a naked man during a lesson on Relationships, Sexual Health, and Parenthood.
The lesson included slides with basic sex education, including puberty changes and pregnancy. One slide even showed a cartoon penis and a couple in bed.
Emma was shocked. She didn’t receive any notice from the school about this lesson. She believes parents should be informed beforehand to help their kids process the information.
She said, “I would have wanted a personal email to prepare my daughter.” Other parents were unaware too, as the notice was only on the school blog.
Emma expressed her concern about the anxiety her daughter felt. She said, “She didn’t want to go to school the next day.”
While Emma supports sex education, she wants more parental involvement in the curriculum. She questions what research supports the age-appropriateness of the material.
Emma believes parents know their kids best. She thinks teachers are under enough stress and need to communicate more with families.
The local council stated that teachers have some flexibility in their lessons. They also mentioned that parents are informed about sensitive topics being taught.
A spokesperson said, “Schools encourage parents to raise any concerns they may have.” They aim to address these concerns while balancing educational responsibilities.
