Newcastle-under-Lyme: The council just opened the new Castle Car Park. It cost £11 million and has 468 spaces. This replaces the old Midway car park.

They’re hoping to avoid the mistakes made by Stoke-on-Trent. Remember when Stoke opened their Smithfield car park? They lost £15,000 last year. Newcastle wants to do better.

The council aims to make £91,000 from parking by 2025/26. They believe this will come from more demand and better pricing.

Councillor Mike Stubbs raised concerns about comparing with Stoke. He mentioned their new car park isn’t making money. He worries about Newcastle’s success too.

Castle Car Park has set its parking fees. It’s £1.20 for an hour, £2.30 for two hours, and £6.60 for a full day. There’s also an evening charge of £1.50.

They plan to close some other car parks to push people to use Castle Car Park. Simon McEneny explained that Stoke didn’t close any existing car parks, which hurt their revenue.

Newcastle’s strategy is different. They’ll close Midway to drive demand to the new car park. It’s a bit pricier, but they believe it’ll work out better.
