A council has changed its mind about a large housing estate in Cheadle. This decision comes after a public inquiry and significant local opposition.
Bloor Homes had to appeal after the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council said no to their plans. They wanted to build off Froghall Road, but the council thought it was a bad idea.
They argued the land was outside the development boundary and would ruin the view of the Grade II-listed Broad Hayes Farmhouse. Plus, they felt it wouldn’t fit in with the local landscape. But now, the council has changed its mind and dropped its objections.
The inquiry revealed a big housing shortage in the Staffordshire Moorlands, with over 1,000 homes needed. Sarah Reid KC, who represents Bloor Homes, said this project is crucial for sustainable development. She pointed out that there’s a real need for both market and affordable housing in the area.
The planning application has received 185 objections, including from local councillor James Aberley. He believes the development will be too visible and will harm the countryside. He mentioned that it would change the character of the area significantly.
The inquiry is expected to wrap up soon, and we’ll find out what happens next.
