Stoke-on-Trent reflects on five years of Brexit as polls show a majority favor re-joining the EU. Many locals express disappointment with the current situation and seek closer ties.
Stoke-on-Trent: It’s been five years since Brexit, and it feels like a mixed bag. The UK officially left the EU on January 31, 2020, after a long, drawn-out process. You know, all that political back and forth since the 2016 referendum.
The Conservatives are celebrating this anniversary, claiming they’ve honored the will of the people. Dame Priti Patel even said we’ve reaped the benefits, like new trade deals and taking back control.
But not everyone agrees. Labour is trying to reset things with the EU, but they’re not looking to rejoin the customs union or single market. Still, polls show many folks think Brexit was a mistake.
Sir Ed Davey from the Liberal Democrats called the Conservative deal a disaster. He believes it’s hurt farmers and small businesses, and he wants a customs union deal to help the economy.
Green MP Ellie Chowns also wants to rejoin the customs union. She thinks full EU membership is the best option for the UK. Polls from YouGov show that 55% of people back rejoining the EU, which is quite a lot.
Only 30% think Brexit was the right call, and just 11% see it as a success. The Government, however, insists it won’t rejoin the customs union or single market.
Recently, a spokesman for the Prime Minister said they’re focused on strengthening ties with the EU in areas like security and trade. They want to work together for the UK’s national interest.
When asked if they were embarrassed about Brexit, the spokesman said they’re looking to the future. The Prime Minister is all about resetting relationships with Europe and moving forward.
