London: Retro gaming is a fun trip down memory lane for many. You might even find some old games while cleaning out your attic. But guess what? Those dusty boxes could be hiding thousands, maybe even millions, of pounds!
Some games and consoles have skyrocketed in value over the years. Others have gone from being just fun toys to serious collector’s items. GameTop recently shared a list of the most valuable retro games and consoles, and the numbers are mind-blowing.
Take Super Mario Bros, for instance. This classic game, released in 1985, can fetch a whopping $2 million (£1.64 million) if it’s in mint condition. That’s some serious cash for a game that many of us grew up playing!
Other titles like Super Mario 64 and Tetris are also worth a pretty penny. A rare version of Tetris, which became popular in the late ’80s, can go for up to $1 million (£820,000) at auction. Crazy, right?
Now, when it comes to consoles, the most valuable item isn’t even a successful one. It’s a prototype of the Nintendo PlayStation hybrid from the early ’90s. Only one of the 200 prototypes is known to exist, and it sold for over $300,000 (£245,000) in 2020!
Then there’s the 2009 Nintendo Wii Supreme, decked out in 22-karat gold and diamonds, valued at over $400,000 (£327,000). And let’s not forget the Atari Cosmos, a holographic console from the ’80s, now worth around $25,903 (£21,215).
Handheld devices are also raking in cash. Limited edition Game Boys and Nintendo DS models are hot items. For example, the McDonald’s Nintendo DS, made for employees, can sell for up to $3,200 (£2,620). Who knew a fast-food training tool could be so valuable?
Other valuable handhelds include the Pokemon World Championship Nintendo DSi XL and the Advance Wars Nintendo DS, fetching around $2,500 (£2,047) and $800 (£655) respectively. Even the Famitsu 500 Game Boy is worth about £575 (£470) to collectors!
