Yoggi Delicatessen in Newcastle-under-Lyme celebrates its 13th anniversary. Owner Pawel Suder reflects on the journey and the community support that made it possible.
Pawel Suder opened the store in November 2011. He moved to the UK in 2006 and started the shop five years later. To celebrate, they offered free cake and discounts.
Pawel shared that his brother encouraged him to start the business. He saw a gap in the market for a Polish shop in the area. He never expected it to be this successful.
It’s a family-run business, and they treat customers like family. They know what people like and dislike, which makes a big difference.
They even have a try-before-you-buy scheme. This helps customers pick the right products. About 30% of their customers are from other nationalities, so it’s great for everyone.
Starting out wasn’t easy for Pawel. He worked as a delivery driver and saved money while living with his brother. His brother even lent him some cash to get started.
At 24, opening a business in a new country was tough. He had to learn the laws and rules quickly. Advertising was also a challenge at first.
Pawel wanted everything labeled in English, but that confused some Polish customers. So, they added “Polski Sklep” to the sign to make it clear.
He wanted the shop to be for everyone, not just the Polish community. That’s why he chose the unique name, Yoggi. A friend even suggested it while he was getting a haircut!
Yoggi has been active in the local community, raising money for charities. They organized a barbecue to help single mothers with disabled children.
Pawel also got “arrested” for a charity fundraiser. People paid his bail, and they raised £1000 for a good cause. It was all over social media!
He’s happy he chose Newcastle for his business. Pawel loves the community and looks forward to what’s next for Yoggi.
