Keele University has opened a new hub in Newcastle’s town centre. This space will connect the community with educational resources and support services.
Newcastle: Keele University has moved into a former curry house. The old Mr Maliks restaurant is now a vibrant community hub.
This is a first for the university, having a base right in the town centre. It’s a place where locals, businesses, and community groups can tap into Keele’s resources.
The building, a charming three-storey structure, is now called Keele in Town. It’s been revamped into a mixed-use facility with spaces for work and meetings.
Last week, they held an event to celebrate the launch. The hub even features a sustainable café on-site, which is pretty cool.
Professor Trevor McMillan, the Vice-Chancellor, expressed pride in this new chapter. He believes it will create opportunities for everyone in the community.
The space is multifunctional and offers various services. Residents can access free digital support and attend community events like art exhibitions.
It’s also a flexible workspace for Keele students and staff. Plus, there’s free legal advice available for individuals and businesses.
Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group will use the space for adult courses, including English and maths. They’ll cover everything from basic skills to GCSE-level subjects.
The project received partial funding from the Newcastle Town Deal. This was part of a government bid to support Newcastle and Kidsgrove.
Simon Tagg, the council leader, highlighted the strong ties with Keele University. He’s excited about the positive impact this hub will have on the town.
He noted that it will enhance productivity and skill levels in Newcastle-under-Lyme. This is all part of a larger £30 million redevelopment plan for the area.
Interestingly, the former Mr Maliks had been empty since a tragic incident in 2015. The building has now found a new purpose, which is great to see.
