London: The DVSA is making some important changes to MOT testing soon. They want to tackle fraud, especially those sneaky ‘ghost MOTs’ that have been popping up.

So, here’s the deal: garages will now need to snap a photo of the vehicle. They’ll do this right after entering the registration number or VIN. It’s all about making sure everything’s legit.

This new rule is expected to kick off in late February or early March. The DVSA is looking for garages to join the first phase of this pilot scheme. They want feedback to make it even better.

Recent stats show that a whopping eight out of ten fraudulent MOTs are done without proper testing. Chris Price from the DVSA said they aim to create a fair testing environment. Capturing images during tests will help keep things above board.

The DVSA reassured testers that any info or recordings collected will be kept safe. They’ll use this data to improve their work and might share it for research purposes. But don’t worry, all personal data will be anonymized.

They’ll keep this info for a maximum of three years. Before everything starts, testers will get all the details and have to agree to participate. If they change their mind later, they’ll be told how to opt out.
